Martial Arts Updates (what there remains of it)

As I noted in a earlier post, I’ve discovered that if I review forms 1-5 at least three times a week and then rotate to forms 6-9 the next week, they are not as ugly. So, for now, this is the pattern I will follow.

Form 9 is Koryo, the black belt form. After that comes the 2nd dan form, Keumgang. After reaching 1st dan I was taught Keumgang and started to learn the 3rd dan form. On I whim–and using my TKD forms DVD and book–I started to re-learn the 2nd dan form. This video was handy on YouTuber and so far I’ve recalled up to 1:06.

Keumgang was never my favorite form. The diamond blocks and mountain blocks always seemed unrealistic and impractical to me. But what do I know? All the horse stance work does make for some nice exercise. Also the palm strike sequence does have some practicality. To a lesser extent, the hook punch/simultaneous elbow strikes do too.

Graduate School (again)

I blogged about this maybe 8 months ago. I have a terminal degree at the masters level. This degree is what is required for my higher ed job. To be a specialist, dept. head, or director in my chosen field, some colleges or universities will require a “second advanced degree.” Sometimes the job ad in my field will call specifically for a second master’s degree and sometimes ads will specify a Ph.D. (Ph.D.’s are typically required for the elite private Universities or R1 Universities.)

Ph.D is not going to happen. Not for all the vodka and hookers in Vegas!

A second masters, however, is in the realm of possibility. The college I work at is affiliated with The University. As such, I get one free University class each semester. In addition there is some educational funding available from my college. Bottom line: I’d only have to pay for roughly 1/3rd of the degree.

The University has a Master’s Degree in Higher Education Administration. With the exception of the final capstone defense which takes place at The University, the entire program is online. Better still, I can take up to three classes prior to having been accepted into the next cohort. I missed the application deadline for fall but have until September to apply for the spring cohort. I am 95% certain that I am going to enroll in two courses this fall and apply for admission. If accepted into the program the courses count towards the degree.

11 courses total and at two per semester it would take three years to complete. The beauty here is that a year from now if I would land the last director job I could continue the program from wherever I end up moving. I would have to travel back to The University for the Capstone defense, but that’s doable.

If getting out of The Land of Cowboys takes longer than expected that’s okay too. This means I’d be closer to completion and would have to pay for less of the degree. The “second advanced degree” would allow me to apply for more director or dean jobs and overall set me up for success. So it’s possible that this blog may turn into a space for me to bitch about graduate school. Stay tuned!

If the grad school plan pans out I may need one of these to handle the stress!
